All the things we only *wish* someone had told us when we started.

We get it, as a nurse coach and entrepreneur, you’re wearing all the hats in your business. You’re overwhelmed as it is, navigating imposter syndrome and perfectionism, and then on top of it, you’re supposed to create engaging and impactful social media content?!

When you’re feeling like that, no wonder it feels totally overwhelming. But the thing is, you’re a coach and you know about helping your clients shift their mindset. You just need to apply it to this aspect of your business!

So, let’s shift mindset about your content and how you’re creating it

STOP doing these 3 things…

1 – Stop posting just to post and cranking out content

Don’t even get us started about “consistency.” Consistently doing things that don’t work is just going to exhaust you and waste your time. You can literally waste years throwing spaghetti at the wall; don’t do it. Believe us, we know and we spent a lot of time making this mistake in the beginning. We were so focused on trying to make reels every day that we hadn’t even created our offers or mapped out our program.

Remember, social media isn’t your job. Coaching is. And yes, this *might* be your main way to connect with people. But we promise that you’re going to feel so much better about all of it if you’re actually proud of what you’re putting out there and if it feels like you

2 – Stop making a piece of content from start to finish each time

This is asking for trouble. You’re constantly context switching when you have to think of a story, a caption, a hook, a caption teaser, a call to action, which video to use for b roll or whether to talk to the camera, not to mention other design elements like a reel cover. No wonder you’re exhausted.

3 – Stop focusing so much on each post

One post is not going to make or break you and your business. The way you connect with people and create relationships is going to come from you overall and over time. So don’t over think it!

Start doing these 6 things…

1 – Start thinking about your big vision aka your overall content strategy

That big vision you help your clients get in touch with? Let’s imagine it for YOU and for your online presence. How do you want to feel when you see your own content – whether that’s on social media, on your website, on a flyer or business card that you had out, or in a course you create? How do you want others to feel when they see your content? What’s your overall mission and purpose for what you’re creating in your business? Does your content relate back to that?

For example, we break our content down into 4 categories, or pillars. Mindset, skillset, creativity, and stories. So when we’re creating, we want to ensure that whatever it is falls into one of those. We also want to ensure that they’re fairly balanced.

  • Mindset – addressing challenges like showing up online, visibility, perfectionism
  • Skillset – practical information about social media platforms and tools, like tutorials and updates
  • Creativity – addressing blocks to creativity and helping people get in touch with their own, flow states, creative hobbies and wellness
  • Stories – the power of sharing your story, storytelling as both magic and medicine, storytelling for community, prompts for drawing out your own

Choose 3-4 big ideas that you want to share with people. What in your niche or specialty lends itself to a mix of sharing your experiences and expertise? Yes, you’re a coach but you’re not going to sell coaching by selling coaching (it doesn’t work, we made that mistake already!). What are the big themes in your work? What are the key stories you want to share?

2 – Start imagining that with each piece of content, you’re making an investment and building something bigger

Get out of the habit of viewing content creation and posting on social media as a chore. Whether you’re creating it yourself or investing in help with this, you’re still the person behind your personal brand and you need your energy to be right for people to resonate with it! Imagine that you’re creating, not a singular piece of content, but one part of your overall body of work.

That sounds better doesn’t it? Your body of work! Realize that what you share over and over can be the foundation for a blog, or even a book someday. Remember, this is what you want to be known for, so be intentional about it.

3 – Start creating a home for your ideas

Remember, this is an investment and we’re building your personal brand, brick by brick, post by post. So write like it! As we build a bank of content, you’re going to have stories that you share over and over. It’s going to be *so much easier* if you keep them in a place that’s easy to return to.

Over the years we’ve used lots of different things – our notes apps, click up, and now, google docs! We’ll go more in depth in another post about how we organize ourselves, but the short answer is that we have a system of folders in google docs and we write in there!

4 – Start by writing

Write what you want to say in the way you’d explain it to your friend. Whether you’re telling a story or educating about something in your niche, first get the idea out of your head and into writing. Then organize it accordingly. Maybe as you let your thoughts flow, you realize you actually have more than one thing to say. Or maybe you realize that this story leads to a really important conclusion. Maybe you see that there’s a process or a list of things you want to share.

5 – Start by knowing you’ll repurpose

Whatever form it takes, now you’re at the point where you can flow with it! And now that the idea is here, you’ll likely recognize there’s going to be more than one way to share it. This time it might be as a short reel with a really captivating hook, and the whole story in the caption. Next time you might use your caption as a script and tell your story, face to camera. And the time after that you might transform it into a carousel. You might also treat it like an experiment and switch up the hooks, video, or the call to action.

6 – Start believing that sharing your story can be healing for YOU

For the longest time, we dreaded “sharing our story.” Any time we would restructure our content, take another course, or work with a mentor, we would be encouraged to include more about our story. And honestly, it took us years to figure out how to actually do that, in spite of everything we learned. For me, everything changed when I started sharing my stories of leaving the hospital on LinkedIn. I had been reflecting on leaving the bedside, moving to France, and all the change that came with it. And I just started writing as stories instead of trying to teach something about mindset or wellbeing. And it’s honestly been one of the best parts of my healing journey to date.

When we share things vulnerably, even things that we feel like we’re the only one, it gives others a chance to say, “me too!” And that feels as good for me as it does for them. And now, those stories flow out of me in ways I can’t even see coming. It all started with one. But the more I shared, the more ideas I got, the more people commented and shared themselves, and the more ideas I got again, and you can see what’s happening here.

In order to do this though, we need to see the value in ourselves and what we’ve gone through. We need to recognize that what we know isn’t obvious to everyone else, we just mistakenly think it is.
